Lancer girls hoopsters preparing for a deep run during unconventional season

The St. Joseph Catholic Academy Lady Lancers are preparing for a late season push in hopes of gaining momentum for the playoffs. The Lady Lancers currently stand at 6-5 in conference play (6-6 overall) placing them fifth in the tough Metro Classic Conference. They are next featured in action on Wednesday, January 27 versus the top team in the conference, Martin Luther.

With only six games left in the season (five of which are conference games) the Lancers are determined to leave their mark on the regular season.  St Joseph junior guard Sarah Ryan is very confident in the Lancers’ ability to prosper throughout the end of the season, she says, “best case scenario we go undefeated throughout the rest of the season.”

The uniqueness of the season has definitely played a role in the team’s success. It has taught the Lady Lancers to never take a game for granted. With already four regular season games cancelled the team has become familiar with the unconventional year thus far. Playing basketball – a high-intensity sport – wearing a mask is unheard-of in the times before 2020, but the girls will do anything to capture the memories of the season. “It definitely impacts your breathing, and the communication (on the court), but it’s worth it for the experience and memories we made,” said junior forward Elizabeth Russert.

The 2020-21 season has undoubtedly been a year to remember. The Lady Lancers typically play a 22-game regular season, but due to Covid and the uncertainty of even having a season, the team has been given 18 games (with the hopes of no more games being cancelled). Another big change to the 2020-21 season is the breakup of the WIAA playoffs due to the teams who unfortunately aren’t able to play. The Lady Lancers were enthused when they saw the top ranked division 4 teams were moved up to division 3. “It (the playoffs) should go really well… we have the best record going in,” added Ryan who’s very optimistic about the team’s future.

Look forward to a long postseason from the Lady Lancers at St Joseph Catholic Academy.
