Over the past month, the Lancers have spent a lot of time this offseason in the gym and weight room preparing for the season.

“When you put in the work in the offseason, it pays off during the season. It’s important to stay in game shape and condition. Personally, I really focused on bulking up and getting my weight up this offseason,” stated junior varsity shooting guard Giovanni Bosco.

The Lancers have been holding open gyms since early October. They have been very challenging and demand a lot of hard work and effort from the players. The open gyms have consisted of working out in the weight room, running fives in the gym, and focusing on the details both defensively and offensively thanks in part to Mrs. Jenny Knight-Kenesie (a booster).

The Lancers will be lead by their captain, Joey Feudner. Many players from last year will be returning; making the team very experienced. However, despite the experience, the young Lancer team is predicted to take near last place (out of nine teams) in the conference this season. Part of this may be the height of the team. St. Joseph is one of the shortest teams in the Metro Classic Conference (MCC) with an average height of six feet. The team also finished 7th in conference last season and ended the season with an 8-16 record. The hard work and competitiveness will make up for the lack of height.

Coach Brandon Morris will be returning for his second year as the varsity head coach. He hopes to get the ball rolling right away with the youth filled team. The Lancers, however, have switched their lineup of assistant coaches. Helping out with the varsity squad will be assistant coaches: Coach Lindsay, Coach Colbert, along with JV coaches Coach Kuiper and Coach Gorawlski.

The Lancers held tryouts on Monday, Nov. 18, 2019 and Tuesday, Nov. 19. The 11-man squad kicks off their journey Nov. 26 with an away game at Kenosha Reuther. Tip-off is 6 p.m.
