The Saint Joseph’s cross country team is off to a speedy start this season, placing 1st in their metro conference reunion. SJCA boys team won the meet with a score of 20 points. Dang. Top five boys in this race on the outstandingly fast team were 1) Rocco Matteucci (jr.): 18:18, 1st place; Israel Mondragon (sr.) 19:01, 3rd place; Ben Franklin (sr.) 19:17, 4th place; Michael Pienkos (sr.) 19:37, 5th place and Hayden Dippel 19:54, 7th place (jr).

Senior Michael Mullen said, “The meet had its ups and downs, at first I was thinking it was going to be canceled because of all of the water from the rain and the swamp-like atmosphere, but then I just powered through it ya know, we all decided at that point to finish strong.”

Ian Bischoff  “did not have spikes” to run the race but he still ran it and powered through with his average tennis shoes, showing the dedication and perseverance of not only the members of the team, but the group as a whole. Their run as one mind set and constant support for one another on and off the field is really the key to a great team and season.

When asked how the season is going so far, senior Mary Bolog stated, “The girls team has bonded through our shared struggles, but we always attempt to have a positive attitude.”

What’s next for the Lancer cross country team is the conference meet. Through increasing their mileage every practice and narrowing in on speed training the team is expected to make sectionals, and after that hopefully state.
